“Builders of great cities we all must be.”

This evening, City Council will vote on legislation that would grow Jacksonville's tree canopy more quickly and thoughtfully, by allowing the hiring of additional arborists, landscape architects, and urban foresters to plan, plant, and maintain trees. These new roles would be paid for through the @cityofjax Tree Fund, which has the capacity to do so without diminishing the scope of tree planting projects. We have worked closely with Councilman Joe Carlucci and others to craft Substitute Bill 2025-102, which has changed over the past several weeks, and hope all those who value a greener, cooler, more resilient First Coast will support it as well. 🌳

What's the value of open space on our horizon? "Non-Sign II" in Washington state was created by artists Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo in 2010 to highlight the negative visual impact of ubiquitous billboards along our roads. Measuring 25 feet tall, 35 feet wide, and 3 feet deep, the artwork is the same size as billboards found throughout the area. However, rather than competing with the landscape for attention, Non-Sign II provides a framework through which viewers may appreciate the natural beauty of the skies and surroundings.

We're proud to monitor adherence to our local billboard ordinances here in Jacksonville, to ensure we can enjoy as many clear, scenic views as nature provides.

Charles Young was the first black Colonel in the United States Army, leading the famed Buffalo Soldiers. During his military service, he and his men were instrumental in exploring, settling, and protecting western lands and national parks. Young was eventually appointed as the first black superintendent of the National Park Service at Sequoia National Park. His passion for nature and conservation helped educate the local community, adding to his enduring legacy. With the help of the locals he taught, Young improved the park by reducing poaching of animals, deterring illegal logging, and reducing illegal sheep grazing within the park. He served as superintendent until his death in 1922.

Black history is American history. 🇺🇸
