Charles Young was the first black Colonel in the United States Army, leading the famed Buffalo Soldiers. During his military service, he and his men were instrumental in exploring, settling, and protecting western lands and national parks. Young was eventually appointed as the first black superintendent of the National Park Service at Sequoia National Park. His passion for nature and conservation helped educate the local community, adding to his enduring legacy. With the help of the locals he taught, Young improved the park by reducing poaching of animals, deterring illegal logging, and reducing illegal sheep grazing within the park. He served as superintendent until his death in 1922. Black history is American history. 🇺🇸
